CODES and LEGENDS

1. Solidus (diagonal mark), "/", means a new word or line of text, below the word
or line of text just stated; also means the end of a section of text, after which,
the text location is often given.  Text & vignette locations may be erroneous for
some "unseen labels" due to translation inconsistencies.

2. Measurements are given for horizontal dimension first and vertical dimension
second.  In reference to sheets or panes, the number of labels, across & down, are
given in that order.

3. Sizes of individual labels include text portions.  If the overall size is given,
it is so stated.  Occasionally a pertinent interior or individual item size is also
given. The black background around the edge of many labels is usually not a part of
the
label but is used to highlight perforations, rouletting, etc.

4. In reference to sheets and panes:
-  PM - perforated margin
-  SE - straight edge
-  4S, 3S - 4 sides, 3 sides, etc.
Other facts are given, as necessary.

5. Perf Gauge; The number of perforations within a length of 20mm.
   Roulette gauge is on same basis.

6. Color: The Stanley Gibbons Stamp Color Key, Item No. 2530, was used extensively
to establish colors of available labels.

7. Texts; CAPITAL LETTERS are used whenever a text is known to be capitalized,
regardless of the size of the text.  Misspelled words, if they occur, are "so-
spelled."

Condition: Prices are for fine copies (never hinged, perfs not touching design and
fully-gummed, if so issued).

Labels that are otherwise in fine condition should not be discounted more than
20% because of hinge disturbance or lack of gum.

Prices are generally based on relative availability and are meant to be a guide
only. "Pockets of supply" occasionally come on the market and may temporarily
influence prices downward.

"Rare" evaluations are assigned to scarce labels that are infrequently found and, as
such, have insufficient market activity to justify pricing.  Such items necessitate a
private treaty agreement between the buyer and seller. The sale of rare items is
often accomplished via auction.

items, insufficient market activity has been seen.
