SOKOL POSTCARDS
and Poster Stamps

1919

(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)

Above, post-independence postcard headed: "We have been and will be" and depicting Sokols bearing their banner; addressed to a soldier, a border guard, serving with the 23rd Battalion, 4th Company, at a village near Hostoun na Sumave.

Franked with Hradcany stamps value 15h. cancelled with provisional bi-lingual postmark of Mesto nad Metuji/Neustadt an der Mettau, German removed, dated 17.8.19, and Austrian-type cancel of Huttersdorf applied as a transit mark.

Translated, the poem reads:

We have been and will be,
that is our motto,
which has always carried
the Czech flag to victory.

In the name of our country,
let us take courage
to cope with life and
defeat our enemies.

The Czechoslovak Field Post in Siberia

Unused card produced for the Sokol Gala on 25, 24 VIII 1919 (misprint, should be 23, 24), in Krasnojarsk , which is in central Asia, on the Trans-Siberia Railway, about halfway between Moscow and Vladivostok. Printed by the 3rd Division of the Legion. This was during their famous retreat via the Trans-Siberian Railroad.

Regional festival in Znojmo
Why did the date change?

Note the dates on the cards above: The first says the Festival will take place on August 3, the second has "24" handwritten over the "3," and the third has the 24 printed. The next card, same story, first copy says "3" and second says "24." So clearly the festival had to be rescheduled after preparations were well under way. I wonder what happened. The festival was held on August 24, 1919. (Keep reading)

The poster stamps below tell the same story, the first says August 3, and the second says August 24.

8/12/18 - Štefan Šuták wrote to tell me that the Hungarian Czechoslovak War was being fought from June to August, 1919, and Sokol mobilized its members into the Czech army. So many regional slets were postponed until Autumn that year.

Hey, check out the 1925 page for another Znojmo card with the same design as the one on the left above, the guy on the horse!

Sokol settlement of the county of Podkrkonoší

This one is a bit of a mystery.
The title on the picture side says (in Hungarian): "Léva Honved Laktanya"
which Google translates as "Levice - Homeguard Barracks."
The purple handstamp on the address side says "SOKOLSKÁ SETNINA ŽUPY PODKRKONOŠSKÉ"
which Google translates as "SOKOL SETTLEMENT OF THE COUNTY OF PODKRKONOŠI"

But Levice is in Slovakia while Podkrkonoší is in Bohemia.
I guess there is no law against someone from one place using a card from another.
Maybe the handwritten message explains it all, so I have sent an inquiry to my Czech accomplice Štefan Šuták, to see if he can explain it all.

Addressed to Citizen Josef Zákravský, in care of Mr. Červený (Mr. Red), Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Bohemia

I'm putting this card on this page because the message is clearly dated 1919.

8/20/18 - Štefan explains that the card was sent from a volunteer soldier who was a member of Sokol, fighting in the war in Slovakia. "SOKOLSKÁ SETNINA ŽUPY PODKRKONOŠSKÉ" is the field post office, it serves as the postage, like a Free Frank.
The photo is the army barracks in Levice.

Sevastopol? 1919?

The first card below has "Sevastopol" pencilled on the back, and was advertised in the eBay auction where I acquired it as "Real photo of Czech Legion's Sokol festival in Sevastopol, with Czech and USA bunting. Issued around 1919." The second card, which I acquired separately, is clearly from the same event.
